Why is shut-off valve leaking?

Why is shut-off valve leaking?

Since cut-off (shut-off) valves are rarely used, the washer inside the valve can become hard or covered with mineral deposits over time. When you close the valve then open it again, the washer on the valve stem may not seat properly, causing it to leak around the valve stem nut.

What should I do if my cut off valve is leaking?

Start by slightly tightening the packing nut on the cut-off valve just behind the handle by turning it clockwise. In many cases, that will stop the leak. If the valve still leaks: Turn off the main water supply to the house. Open a faucet in the house to relieve the water pressure. Unscrew the packing nut, and remove the valve stem.

How do you repair a cut off valve on a water faucet?

Turn off the main water supply to the house. Open a faucet in the house to relieve the water pressure. Unscrew the packing nut, and remove the valve stem. Replace the washer on the end of the valve stem. If the washer isn’t replaceable, replace the entire valve stem. Insert the valve stem back in the valve, and screw the nut back on.

What should I do if my toilet shutoff valve is leaking?

Turn off the house water main before taking apart the toilet shutoff valve. Note: Properly sized replacement washers for the shutoff valve are available from plumbing supply houses and better hardware stores that stock a large inventory of repair parts. If this step doesn’t stop the leak, you’ll need to replace the whole valve.

Why does my water shut off valve keep leaking?

When you tighten the packing nut on your main water shut-off valve, it binds down the packing material against the washer to stop any water from getting through. Over time, though, this packing material can form a solid seal because it hardens or disintegrates, which causes the valve to leak.

How can I tell if my water shut off valve is leaking?

You would find obvious signs of the leak when you check the valve under a toilet or sink or one in the basement. As you open and close the valve, it may leak a little. There may be steady drips. A very severe leak is unlikely unless the valve fails completely. There are two things you can do.
