Why does my boiler keep turning off?

Why does my boiler keep turning off?

Cause: Unfortunately, many issues can cause your boiler to shut off regularly. Low water pressure, thermostat problems, air and water mis-circulation, or a closed water valve can cause your boiler to shut off. Check to see if any valves necessary for your boiler’s operation are partially or completely closed.

What causes short cycling on a boiler?

Boiler “short cycling” occurs when an oversized boiler quickly satisfies process or space heating demands, and then shuts down until heat is again required. Process heating demands can change over time. This efficiency decreases when short cycling occurs or when multiple boilers are operated at low firing rates.

Why does my boiler turn off every few minutes?

It does not take the heat exchanger long to reheat this small amount of water back to the thermostat’s temperature setting which is why the boiler quickly turns off again. If the boiler fires up every few minutes it is using gas but not heating your home.

Why does a short cycle boiler fire up?

The internal thermostat of a short cycling boiler will detect that the water in the heat exchanger is cooling and, although the temperature in your home has not dropped, fires up the boiler to reheat the water.

What happens when a boiler is too big?

If the boiler is too big it will be producing more steam than it can condense which will cause short cycling. In the past engineers would generally fit boilers which were bigger than needed to compensate for the high losses. Today, boilers are much more efficient so there is no need to oversize a boiler.

What to do if your boiler pump is broken?

Check the valves on the underside of the boiler – you may have closed one accidentally. However, the broken valve may be inside the boiler, in which case you will be unable to fix it if you are not Gas Safe Registered. You will be unable to repair a broken boiler pump yourself, and will need to contact an engineer.

What does it mean when your boiler keeps turning off?

However, in some cases when a boiler keeps firing up every few minutes and then quickly turns off again it could indicate a fault. It is called short cycling and is likely to make your heating bills more expensive and, in the long term, will cause damage to the boiler.

The internal thermostat of a short cycling boiler will detect that the water in the heat exchanger is cooling and, although the temperature in your home has not dropped, fires up the boiler to reheat the water.

Why does my central heating keep turning off?

A blocked or frozen water pipe will stop the flow of water to your boiler and can cause it to turn off. If there is air in your central heating system, then your boiler may shut down. Bleeding your radiators can help solve the issue as it can remove the air trapped in your system.
