Why do drain pipes knock?

Why do drain pipes knock?

In many cases, knocking pipes are caused by variable water pressure in the main supply pipes coming into your home. But when the air uses in pressurizing those pipes leaks, then water moves suddenly and violently, creating that knocking sound you hear as it travels through the length of your supply lines.

Why do my drains smell?

There could be odor-causing bacteria feeding on debris in your pipes. This process will give off a foul-smelling hydrogen sulfide gas, which smells like sewage or rotten eggs. Also, mold grows where it’s warm and wet — and mold growth on the debris causing a drain clog can also cause a bad smell.

Why are my drains so loud?

As water flows through a drain, it’s displaced by air which helps it move through your pipes. Plumbing vent systems allow for exactly that to happen.

What does it mean when you hear water running in a drain?

Hearing the sound of running water in a building drain is not likely to indicate a problem with the drain system itself.
