What is a shower diverter?

What is a shower diverter?

Your shower diverter works to ensure water is flowing freely between the showerhead and the bath faucet. These valves are common in older homes that were constructed before built-in valves became the standard.

Why is water coming out of the shower head?

So, if water is coming out without having done that, you may have an issue with your shower diverter valve. The valve works as the name indicates by diverting or redirecting water from coming down the tub faucet to flow up to the shower head.

How does a three valve shower head work?

A three-valve shower has three different handles that you turn to open or close the valves. One handle opens the hot water valve, one opens the cold water valve, and the third (generally in the middle of the temperature valves) diverts the water into the spigot or up to the shower head.

Where does the water go when you turn on the shower?

When the diverter is pulled, it pulls a rubber (or sometimes plastic piece) into the hole where the water pours through, plugging spigot where the water normally flows. With this escape-route sealed off, the water has only one place to go: up and into the shower head.

What should I do if my shower head is leaking?

To do this, shut off your water supply by either shutting off the actual valve to the shower head or by shutting off the primary water line and loosening the faceplate of the shower head. Now, in case you aren’t able to take off the faceplate from the shower head, just take off the whole shower head from the entire fixture.

How do you install a new shower head?

To extend the shower head across the shower area, run pipe from the shower valve up through the wall top plate — the upper horizontal element in the stud wall. You’ll make a 90-degree turn, extend pipe over the shower and then make a 90-degree turn down. You’ll install a drop arm and then the new rain shower head.

How do you connect a shower ell to a shower valve?

Connect this shower ell to the top port of the valve with a length of 1/2-inch copper pipe and solder the pipe to the ell and to the adapter that is attached to the valve. After you’ve finished plumbing the shower valve, turn on the water and check for leaks.

Where does the water go in a shower?

A shower has two supply lines, hot and cold, that come together in a center shower control valve. From there water goes up through the shower arm and out the shower head. The shower head and the shower arm are two separate pieces. The instructions below provide general steps for installing a rain shower head.

Why does water come out of the shower head?

Water dripping from the shower heads is occasioned by among other things the wearing out of some replaceable parts. In the faucet is the diverter that divers water from the bathtub to the shower head.
