How does Kohler pop-up drain work?
Pop-up drains work by attaching the lift rod on your faucet to a mechanism below called the linkage. The linkage connects to a part called the ball lever or ball rod assembly that is attached to the drain.
How does a push down bath plug work?
The lever operates a lift linkage that pulls on a spring. The spring pulls a rocker arm that raises and lowers the stopper (see the illustration above). Pushing the knob and the lift rod down causes the pivot rod to push the stopper up. Pulling the knob causes the pivot rod to pull the stopper down.
How can I tell if my Kohler drain is the correct part?
You can easily measure your old plunger body and stopper in the same manner to be sure this is the correct part. It must have been really important for Kohler to have drains that look identical but where some take a 1/16 smaller stopper. Must be to keep people busy, designing stuff that is just fine and doesn’t require an update.
Can you change the stem on a Kohler drain stopper?
BUT, the chrome top easily screws off and onto the old assembly. So if, like me, you just wanted a new chrome top and your stem is O.K., you can swap the tops. Otherwise, you’ll need to file down the fins to fit your drain. The stopper I got had grey fins and a white stem, just like my original, not like the photo above.
