Can a Moen 1224 cartridge be replaced for free?

So it was time to replace the Moen 1224B cartridge on one of my bathroom faucets. I got the cartridge for free and I opted to pay for the removal tool.

Squeeze hard on the pliers’ handles to maintain a good grip on the retainer clip. Slowly pull the clip straight out of the cartridge. Insert a small flathead screwdriver between the bottom of the clip and the cartridge if you cannot grasp the clip with pliers.
